It was the middle of the night. The lights of the kingdom were off allowing the citizens to drink in the splendor of the sparkling stars in the sky. This was a tradition that occurred every four years. Nobles and peasants alike would gather on grassy hills and gaze upon shooting stars together. Though the event itself had yet to begin, the people were more than content with looking on with others at the infinite amount of bright stars for them to gaze. Silently whispering could be heard coming from all directions as they conversed amongst themselves and pointed towards the constellations in the sky. A certain couple had just arrived at the sc
“Anne?” Nerissa searched her young lady’s room for any sign of her. She was a prodigious mage, that young girl, as evidenced by the abundance of magical trinkets scattered throughout her room. But at the same time, she could be so mischievous. Nerissa recalled an incident where the young Anne had mind controlled a group of frogs into playing tiny instruments inside the house. That thought brought up another question in her mind.
“Could she be outside in the yard?”
Nerissa made her way through the mansion and went through the backyard to see a field that was far too large for any normal person to be considered a y
Erhard sat outside of Vistalia’s room, his usual calm and collected demeanor completely broken down. His body was pale—as though he had seen a ghost—and he was drenched from head to toe in sweat. He was out of his usual elegant clothing, donning only pants that had been torn up recently and shoes. His exposed chest was bound with bloody bandages and scarred with injuries presumably caused by weapons of some sort. Aside from the wound covered by the bandage, the small cuts around his body were indicators that whoever injured him had used a small, knife like blade.
Any who saw him would think him insane for being out and abou
"Oh, is that you, Erhard?" Vistalia was sitting by a table looking rather strange. A kaleidoscope was in her hands. She was looking through the tube and examining the plethora of colors and shapes that appeared from it. This was not the strange part, however. Erhard was fully aware of her fascination with the toys since long ago. Infatuated with the things, she was. The odd part was her attire. She dressed as she normally did each and every day. Her extravagant dress was completely gone.
"Afternoon, love. No dress tonight?" Erhard raised an eyebrow.
"No." She placed the kaleidoscope down on the table and shook her head. "There's no need fo
And from that point on, he saw the man more and more often around Laine manor. It took little time for he and Vistalia to become a commonly known item. The two seemed so infatuated with one another that the green-eyed monster inside of him couldn't help but burn with rage. He suspected the man of being insincere with his emotions, but the lack of proof he had only made him more guilty to indulge in his emotions. He felt selfish, immature, even. How dare he prioritize his own happiness over his lady's?
Each and every time the Summers' heir came to visit, Erhard elected to stay stoic. Above all else, her happiness was all that mattered. A rela
Erhard stood by his lonesome at the corner of the room, silently monitoring the scene around him. The Laine family ballroom was filled to the brim with noblemen and women alike sharing dances with another. For them, it was a grand festivity with plenty of fun to be had all around. For him, it was a source of unending stress. He was to be on the look out for any suspicious figures along with four other guards and deal with them if necessary. The fact that he, unlike the others, was situated inside with ballroom itself was both a blessing and a curse.
The good news was that he'd have a view of all things going on inside. If the others were to
"Ah!" Vistalia cried out as Erhard toppled them both down to the floor. "Well, I have to admit it, you're definitely improving." She tried staying cheerful, but Erhard clearly wasn't falling for her sugarcoating.
"Yes, instead of toppling you twenty two times I've only done it twenty one." He sighed, standing up and offering a hand to Vistalia. She took it and looked at him with a pitying smile.
"I'm sure you'll get the hang of it if you keep it up." She gave him a peck on the cheek. "You're always perfect at everything you put your mind into, remember?"
"I suppose so..." He let out a heavy sigh. He had been putting his mind into it. Hell,
Erhard had arrived at his lady's manor late in the afternoon, far later than he would on any other day. Vistalia had requested that he pick out a suit of much higher quality than the types he was accustomed to wearing. Requested was putting it somewhat gently. It was more of an order from a lady to her knight that anything else. The woman could be damn forceful if she needed to be, but that was one of the reasons he loved her so.
"My, my, my! Lookie what we've got here! I thought our lady ordered a guard, not a nancy boy." One of the two guards defending the gates jeered at him, chuckling madly.
Erhard frowned, glaring at the guard.
"I've
"Now, when you are walking into the ball with your partner of choice, your poise is absolutely of the essence." Vistalia explained wisely to the young girls that had been sent to her manor. As a noblewoman, she was often enlisted to teach the much younger ladies all the basics of proper manners. With the princess's ball drawing ever closer, this was all the more important. She had never envisioned herself as a teacher, but she would be lying if she said it was boring. This was especially true now that they had gotten into one of her least favorite childhood exercises.
"I direct your attention to these books here." Vistalia could barely hold
